Gloria Steinem has a lot to say about the depictions of women in popular culture. Not only has she called for a boycott of NBC's new fall series The Playboy Club, but the feminist icon thinks the Kardashian sisters aren't doing women any favors with their tabloid-fodder behavior.
At a New York City reception in honor of her upcoming HBO documentary Gloria: In Her Own Words, Steinem, 77, told the New York Daily News that the Kardashians don't "empower" women. But it's not all their fault.
"They're not empowering other women, but there's no point in blaming the people who take advantage of the system without changing the system. Imagine if this were a family of boys," Steinem says. "If men were rewarded for the same things, they would be doing it, too."
The Kardashians are seemingly in the news every day, and it all started when their original reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians debuted in 2007. But middle sister Kim Kardashian, 30, is also known for her infamous sex tape with singer Ray J that went viral that same year.
While Steinem took the Kardashians to task, she did have some compliments to pay Lady Gaga: "I think she speaks for outsiders and she champions being yourself no matter what. It seems positive to me."
