Mitt Romney: From South Carolina loss to big Florida surge

Energized by two recent debates and powered by a campaign war chest that?s allowed him to blanket the state with ads attacking Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney has surged in late polling.

In the final days and hours before the Republican primary in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich surged ahead in the polls, leaving Mitt Romney scrambling to make the best of an increasingly losing situation. Romney got shellacked in that race, losing to Gingrich by nearly 13 points.

Going into Florida, the next big contest and one that?s worth more convention delegates than all three of the previous races combined, the reverse has happened.

Energized by his more aggressive performance in two Florida debates, and powered by a campaign war chest that?s allowed him to blanket the state?s media markets with attack ads, Romney has surged in late polling.

A survey by the Tampa Bay Times, the Miami Herald, and two Florida TV stations has Romney ahead, 42 percent to 31 percent. Public Policy Polling finds ?strong movement away from Newt Gingrich and toward Mitt Romney.? PPP?s latest poll (out Saturday) gives Romney an eight-point edge (40-32).?An NBC/Marist poll released Sunday gives Romney a 15-point lead (42-27).

?It's clear that the negative attacks on Gingrich have been the major difference maker over the last week,? reports PPP. ?His net favorability has declined 13 points in just five days. Romney has pretty much stayed in place.?

Gingrich got what could be important backing over the weekend from two tea party superstars ? Sarah Palin and Herman Cain. Palin in particular has been trying to counter the sharp anti-Gingrich assertions of such establishment Republicans as former Sen. Bob Dole, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and Sen. John McCain, who (referencing Romney?s great wealth) calls Gingrich a ?desperate candidate who attacks someone who succeeds in the free-enterprise system.?

RECOMMENDED:?Herman Cain and Sarah Palin: Do they still have political clout?

Although she hasn?t officially endorsed Gingrich (as Cain has), Palin is firing back?on Fox News and social media.?

?We have witnessed something very disturbing this week,? Palin writes in a Facebook message headlined ?Cannibals in GOP Establishment Employ Tactics of the Left.? ?The Republican establishment which fought Ronald Reagan in the 1970s and which continues to fight the grassroots Tea Party movement today has adopted the tactics of the left in using the media and the politics of personal destruction to attack an opponent.?

That opponent, she goes on, is Newt Gingrich ? the man who ?brought the Reagan Revolution into the 1990s.?

Money is a major factor in the Florida race for Republican primary votes, and it?s clear that Romney has the advantage. Huffington Post political reporter Paul Blumenthal lays out the scene:

?The biggest spender in Florida ? the most expensive state in the Republican primary to date ? has been the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future. Run by a trio of former Romney advisers, the group has spent $10.7 million in the state. The vast majority of that ? $9.9 million ? has gone into a barrage of ads, on television and radio, and direct mail attacking Gingrich. That's more than double what pro-Gingrich super PAC Winning Our Future is spending in Florida.?

On the Sunday TV talk shows, Gingrich called that ?carpet bombing,? and he accused Romney of flat out lying, both in this past week?s two debates in Florida and in his campaign ads.

?I don?t know how you debate a person when he stands there and blatantly just doesn?t tell the truth,? Gingrich said on Fox News Sunday. "He just tries to tear down whoever he's running against, and it has an effect.?

?We're in a very tough campaign down here,? Gingrich said. That?s a point on which all can agree.

Experts want suicide risk warning on ADHD drug (Reuters)

GAITHERSBURG, Maryland (Reuters) ? Children who take a common drug for attention deficit disorder should be warned about the risk of suicidal thoughts, U.S. pediatric health advisers said on Monday.

Several members of an advisory committee to the Food and Drug Administration asked the agency to change the label for Focalin, an attention deficit medicine made by Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG, to reflect this risk. The drug is approved for children aged 6 or older.

The FDA often follows the advice of its committees, although it is not required to.

The FDA said it received eight reports of suicidal thoughts for children or adolescents who took the drug over the past six years, and four of the cases appeared to be linked to the medicine. The link for the remaining cases was less clear.

"The suicidal ideation seems to be pretty serious," said Dr. Sheldon Kaplan, panel member and chief of infectious diseases at Texas Children's Hospital.

But the FDA said the risk of suicidal thoughts did not appear in clinical trials for Focalin, and the later reports were a tiny number compared to how many children used the drug.

"I'm somewhat puzzled by the focus of suicidal ideation," said Tom Laughren, head of the FDA's psychiatric products division, in response to the panel's recommendation.

"These drugs are very widely used. And what you're seeing here are a handful of reports that are difficult to interpret with regard to causality," he said.

The number of children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has skyrocketed in recent years, with the condition now affecting 3 to 5 percent of kids globally.

Children with ADHD are excessively restless, impulsive and easily distracted, and often have trouble at home and in school. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be kept in check by a combination of behavioral therapy and medication.

In the United States, some 2.7 million people have prescriptions for ADHD drugs including Novartis' Ritalin, Johnson & Johnson's Concerta, Shire's Adderall and Vyvanse and Eli Lilly's Strattera.

Some patient advocates say doctors and parents may be too quick to diagnose kids with the condition, and the drugs may cause side effects that can damage children's health.

The FDA said about 1.8 million children received prescriptions for Focalin or its generic versions from May 2005 to July 2011.

The label for Focalin already warns patients that they may have new psychotic or manic symptoms after taking the drug, but does not mention suicidal thoughts.

Out of other ADHD drugs, only Strattera's label mentions thoughts of suicide as a side effect, as part of a restrictive "black box" warning.

The FDA monitors reports of side effects from medicines after they've been approved in order to discover potential safety problems. For drugs that are used by children, the agency must hold regular advisory meetings to review their safety.

The advisory committee and FDA reviewers also recommended a change to Focalin's label to reflect the risk of anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction, and angioedema, a type of swelling beneath the skin.

Novartis said it is will make any necessary changes to Focalin's label after discussing them with the FDA.

"Novartis is committed to patient safety and will continue to work closely with the FDA as the agency completes its review," said Brandi Robinson, spokeswoman for the company.

Georgian president to visit White House (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The president of the former Soviet Republic of Georgia is expected Monday at the White House.

President Barack Obama welcomes President Mikhail Saakashvili (sah-kahsh-VIH'-leh) 20 years after the U.S. and Georgia established diplomatic relations. The White House says Obama will reconfirm U.S. support for Georgia's territorial integrity. Georgia went to war with Russia in 2008 over two separatist provinces.

Obama is expected to underscore the importance of Washington's defense relationship with Georgia and its contributions to the international coalition in Afghanistan. Trade, tourism, energy, science, education and culture are also on the agenda.

Later, the president hosts a reception for the foreign diplomatic corps, and in the evening he's scheduled to answer questions about his State of the Union address in an interview with YouTube and Google-Plus.

No crowing from Donovan after win against Dempsey

Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey

updated 9:38 a.m. ET Jan. 28, 2012

LIVERPOOL, England - There was no crowing from Landon Donovan after he led his Everton side to victory over Clint Dempsey's Fulham in England's FA Cup.

After all, the U.S. teammates will be on the same side again soon enough.

Donovan set up both Everton goals in Friday night's 2-1 win but says Dempsey is still the American success story in this season's Premier League.

The former New England Revolution forward has scored 15 goals for Fulham since August and Donovan says "in my opinion, he's been one of the players of the season in the Premier League."

United States international Tim Howard was in goal for Everton and Donovan says the match was "a little bit of an American invasion."

Topless protesters detained at Davos forum (AP)

DAVOS, Switzerland ? Three topless Ukrainian protesters were detained Saturday while trying to break into an invitation-only gathering of international CEOs and political leaders to call attention to the needs of the world's poor. Separately, demonstrators from the Occupy movement marched to the edge of the gathering.

After a complicated journey to reach the heavily guarded Swiss resort town of Davos, the Ukrainians arrived at the entrance to the complex where the World Economic Forum takes place every year.

With temperatures around freezing in the snow-filled town, they took off their tops and tried to climb a fence before being detained. "Crisis! Made in Davos," read one message painted across a protester's torso, while others held banners that said "Poor, because of you" and "Gangsters party in Davos."

Davos police spokesman Thomas Hobi said the three women were taken to the police station and told that they weren't allowed to demonstrate. He said they would be released later Saturday.

The activists are from the group Femen, which has become popular in Ukraine for staging small, half-naked protests to highlight a range of issues including oppression of political opposition. They have also conducted protests in some other countries.

"We came here to Switzerland to Davos to explain the position of all poor people of the world, to explain that we are poor because of these rich people who now sit in the building," said Inna Schewcenko.

Protesters from the Occupy movement that started with opposition to practices on Wall Street held a separate demonstration in Davos on Saturday. A small group of protesters are camped in igloos in Davos to call for more help for the needy.

About 40 Occupy protesters gathered in front of the town hall. Some held placards with slogans such as "If voting would change anything, it would be illegal" and "Don't let them decide for you, Occupy WEF."

They then marched toward the forum, prompting about a dozen police officers to hastily erect a mobile barrier as Saturday shoppers looked on with bemusement.

The demonstrators chanted anti-capitalist slogans, remaining about 100 feet (30 meters) from police lines.

One member of the Occupy camp was invited to speak at a special event outside the forum on Friday night to discuss the future of capitalism; British opposition leader Ed Miliband was also speaking.

Soon after the panel discussion began, some activists in the audience jumped up and started chanting slogans, and the protester panelist walked off the stage.

Other members of the audience told the activists to "shut up" and arguments disrupted the panel for about 20 minutes. The discussion then resumed, without the Occupy panelist.

RolePlayGateway?

There are a few bits of language and bodily expression that I'd like to discuss with everyone. If you have ideas for phrases you think would be fun, cute, snobby, or otherwise then please leave a comment with the phrase and we'll see about making it part of the RP.

So this world has common phrases that are used by all races to express exasperation, anger, sadness, indifference, happiness and awe as well as a few bodily expressions that are used in association with said emotional states. These are not written in stone and the words within may be altered somewhat depending on how the individual was raised but the basic meaning of each phrase is universal and understood by all no matter how subtly the words may change from person to person.

(And just in case nobody notices, each race is quite heavy on the beliefs in the Divines which is why the Gods are such a common mentioning in these phrases. The degree to which your character's believe is up to you, but remember that the Divines are real immortal peoples who live in the Realm of the Divines which is basically another physical plane that they have isolated themselves in)

Exasperation:

"Heaven's above!" - used primarily when heavily irritated
"Dear Divines..." - used when exhausted and facing another sudden crisis
Bodily Expressions: One shoulder sometimes slumps to one side, feet sometimes will tap unconsciously, and pacing becomes frequent at times of rest

Anger:

"Gods protect you because I won't!" - Typical phrase when yelling at someone who has thoroughly ticked you off
"Your thoughts are not your own..." - This is pretty much the ultimate insult and slap to to the face to anyone of any race. This phrase means that there is no real thought within the mind of the accused and that any thoughts they do have were given to them by another. Insulting one's intelligence is the ultimate verbal offense in Dragons of Etherea because each race prides itself separately, though at the same time universally, for educating their people on their respective culture, history, language and social skills. Be careful with this one because if you say it to the wrong person you'll find yourself on the wrong end of a blade or worse.
Bodily Expressions: (Anger is expressed in so many ways that it is almost pointless to list the common features but here we go anyway) Teeth become bared and the jaw tightens (used more commonly among Merfolk and Jumentai due to their animal side), fists become clenched and the arms flex indicating a possible confrontation, Avoidance and silence become common in the behavior of the individual and are typically directed only at the perpetrator

Sadness:

"The skies weep tears to compliment my own" - This is common when the loss of someone you hold dear is still a fresh and recent tragedy in your life. Basically this phrase means that your heart still weeps and that you are still in a somewhat vulnerable and fragile state and wish to be given sufficient space to grieve.
"Time is cruel and so is life" - Pretty self explanatory, but still. Basically it means that you feel your time and life are being wasted. This can be interpreted as regret, bitterness, being tormented, or straight up in suppressed agony.
"The Divines seem to delight in my misery" - When sadness comes around more than what seems is fair, this is a very common phrase. Usually this means that you have experienced tragedy after tragedy, be if losing loved ones or simply never getting a break from bad luck overshadowing your very existence.
Bodily Expressions: Head is slightly forward and eyes look down often, silence becomes very prominent in social behavior, forced smiles and laughter, separation becomes common such as sitting at the edge of camp when everyone else is around the fire.

Indifference:

There are no real spoken phrases that convey indifference to others. Instead the body language is the largest indicator of someone's detachment from what's going on around them. Common occurrences are such things as silence without the typical evasion that comes with anger and too without the desire for prolonged separation as with sadness. No real laughter at jokes and typically the body is relaxed and off guard depending on the individual.

Happiness:

"Divines smile on you." - Typically said in greeting to someone of familiarity or one of family, however it can also be used when speaking to someone who has just given you a gift or who saved your life in some way
"May the Gods guide your steps with honor and pride." - More formal, typically directed towards a superior or to an elder
"*Insert name of God/Goddess* watch over you." - Usually said when addressing a friend who holds a more powerful belief in a particular Divine
Bodily Expressions: Happiness can be felt from some distance away given the smile and the light footed nature that comes with it. Typically one who is happy will walk with a more brisk step and a light hearted expression on their face. Happiness comes in many forms, as we all know, and so for each individual the outward signs are slightly different.

Will Israel really attack Iran? And if they do, how will that affect you?

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

As the Sabbath evening approached on Jan. 13, Ehud Barak paced the wide living-room floor of his home high above a street in north Tel Aviv, its walls lined with thousands of books on subjects ranging from philosophy and poetry to military strategy. Barak, the Israeli defense minister, is the most decorated soldier in the country?s history and one of its most experienced and controversial politicians. He has served as chief of the general staff for the Israel Defense Forces, interior minister, foreign minister and prime minister. He now faces, along with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 12 other members of Israel?s inner security cabinet, the most important decision of his life ? whether to launch a pre-emptive attack against Iran. We met in the late afternoon, and our conversation ? the first of several over the next week ? lasted for two and a half hours, long past nightfall. ?This is not about some abstract concept,? Barak said as he gazed out at the lights of Tel Aviv, ?but a genuine concern. The Iranians are, after all, a nation whose leaders have set themselves a strategic goal of wiping Israel off the map.? ...

Costa Concordia wreck: What we know a week later

Many details have emerged about what happened before and after the Costa Concordia ran aground on Jan. 13, but it's still unclear what the captain was doing much of that time.

A week after the Costa Concordia sank in shallow water two hours into a holiday cruise, transfixing the world, attention is now focused on the behavior of the captain before and after the ship hit a rock formation at 9:40 p.m.

What began as a serious tragedy off the Tuscan island of Giglio may now have some serious tabloid elements to the story.

New questions involve the role of a 25-year old blonde Moldovan, a Filipino cook, the captain?s alcohol intake, a dinner ordered after the collision, and the captain?s moves after the ship ran aground, leaving a 160-foot gash in the hull.

Captain Francesco Schettino seems to have been attentive to Domnica Cemortan, alternately described as a hostess and a dancer, for much of the evening before, during, and after the ship hit the rock, possibly dining with her as late as 10:30 p.m. The two were also together as late as midnight, according to Ms. Cemortan, at a lifeboat station, where he ordered her to leave the semi-submerged ship.

What was clarified this week: After charting an alternate course to?sail closer to Giglio Island ? a course that Costa Cruises?denies it authorized?? Schettino told investigators he ?turned too late? to avoid rocks that some maritime experts say are uncharted but do show up on other nautical charts. In?one animated mapping?using nautical GPS positioning of the Concordia, the back half of the ship is shown grazing what is described as an exposed rock.

Transcripts of radio conversations between the Coast Guard and Schettino confirm that he left the ship while hundreds of passengers were still onboard.?

In upcoming days, an accurate timeline may emerge of Schettino?s precise movements?between the restaurant and the bridge?as well as who he called and consulted?? facts that are still murky and confused right now.?The details have serious legal implications and consequences for insurance and recovery of the $450 million ultra-modern vessel. ?

Today rescue workers said the 117,000 ton Concordia is shifting on the ocean floor by 1.5 centimeters an hour, delaying additional rescue efforts and attempts at removing the oil onboard. Relatives of the 11 dead and 21 still missing are arriving from Peru, India, and European nations.

Romney talks housing, ends up defending banks

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney came to ground zero of the housing crisis Tuesday to assail rival Newt Gingrich over his ties to the government-backed mortgage companies that helped make it worse, a message Romney has been pushing since he landed in the state. But that meant he also had to talk about banks ? and he continued what's become a habit of comparing companies to people.

Romney was standing outside a Fannie Mae-foreclosed home in a struggling neighborhood telling a small crowd why they're having so much trouble. "In this case, it's because of the banks," he explained. "Well, the banks aren't bad people. They're just overwhelmed right now."

During a Monday roundtable with business owners struggling in Florida's hobbled housing market, the former Massachusetts governor told the group that their troubles with banks came because the lenders were worried about staying in business.

"The banks are scared to death, of course," he said. "They're feeling the same thing that you're feeling. And so they just want to pretend that all this is just going to get paid some day."

Both comments echoed the now-famous line Romney delivered from a hay bale at the Iowa state fair: "Corporations are people, my friend!"

They're also part of a string of comments Romney has made that his opponents have used to pummel him as wealthy and out of touch with average Americans. Ahead of the New Hampshire primary, he said he once feared being "pink-slipped" and later said "I like to fire people." He was referring to insurance companies, but both Democrats and his Republican rivals attacked him for it.

In calling corporations people, Romney was referring to laws that give companies some rights under the law that are also given to people. And in Florida, he's been trying to explain that banks are scared they'll go out of business because so many people have stopped paying their mortgages. He's also argued that regulations passed during the Obama administration give banks less flexibility if they're trying to help consumers renegotiate the terms of their mortgages.

He's focusing on the housing market because it's a critical issue in Florida, where the GOP primary will be held on Jan. 31. Gingrich, his chief rival, earned more than $1.6 million working as a consultant to Freddie Mac. The mortgage giant was heavily involved in the subprime lending business that helped drive the housing bubble.

"Housing has become a mess in large measure because the government got in the middle of it," Romney said. "I'm running against a guy, as you know, in this primary, who was out there working for one of those guys in the case of Freddie Mac."

Freddie Mac, a government-sponsored enterprise, was originally designed to help more people get access to mortgages to buy homes.

Romney himself hasn't outlined any specific proposals to help fix the housing market. He says improving the economy will allow Americans to regain their footing and keep their homes.

Since coming to Florida, though, he's softened his rhetoric. Last year, he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the government should let the foreclosure crisis "run its course and hit the bottom." Now, he's saying the housing market needs to be "reset" so that the American economy can "rebuild."

"The distress they're feeling here was heartbreaking," Romney told reporters after the Monday roundtable. "I want to do my very best to help people like that."

Lynn Rogers of the Wildlife Research Institute, affiliated with North American Bear Center, said in a news release that Jewel gave birth in a den near Ely to the first cub at 7:22 a.m. Sunday, and a second at 8:40.

It's not the first time Rogers and his colleagues have monitored hibernating pregnant black bears.

In 2010, they recorded the birth of a bear named Hope in 2010. A Hunter killed Hope last year.

Jewel is the younger sister of Hope's mother, Lily.

Lily also gave birth last year to two cubs named Faith and Jason.

Kevin Federline Rushed To Hospital In Sydney

The man who became famous for a short marriage to Britney Spears is back in the news again, but this time it?s not good. The former dancer was filming a reality show in Australia called ?Excess Baggage? when the accident happened. Apparently he was trying to play football with some blokes when he collapsed. He was then rushed to the hospital where he stayed to be observed. TMZ puts him at 6-foot 231 lbs, which gives him a BMI score of 31.3. That numbers puts him well into the ?obese? category. Most of us agree that BMI is a stupid way to determine what kind of shape a person is in, but if you look at recent pictures of him, it?s clear that he hasn?t been doing so good. In fact, the show is about getting in shape. They were in the middle of filming a training routine when he started to complain of chest pains and couldn?t go on with shooting. After paramedics took a look at him he was sent to the hospital for further testing. In the beginning, everyone was writing that he had a heart attack, but doctors have ruled that out. Sony unveils Walkman B170 Series, promises to boost your bass

Sony has unveiled a slate of new Walkman MP3 players today, with the launch of its B170 Series. Available in both 2GB and 4GB varieties, these new devices weigh in at just 28 grams, but apparently pack plenty of punch, providing up to 18 hours of listening on a full charge. If you're pressed for time, though, you can just plug it in for three minutes, which, in turn, will give you a full 90 minutes of listening time. There's also an onboard equalizer, voice recorder and USB port, as well as a dedicated "Bass Boost" that, as you may have guessed, will boost your bass. No word yet on pricing, but Sony says its new Walkmans will be available sometime this month. Full PR after the break.

Tuskegee airman buried at Arlington (AP)

ARLINGTON, Va. ? On the same day that retired Air Force Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Jr. took his resting place among other war and military heroes, his real-life story as a World War II aviator played out on movie screens across the country.

Weathers was buried Friday at Arlington National Cemetery in a service that began with a flyover of four F-16 jets in the Missing Man formation, a special honor reserved for pilots, by the 113th Wing of the D.C. Capital Guardians, the same unit that guards the airspace over the nation's capital.

Weathers died Oct. 15 in Tucson, Ariz., of pneumonia at age 90. His burial coincided with the official opening in theaters of "Red Tails," a George Lucas-produced movie retelling the story of the Tuskegee Airmen who debunked widely held beliefs that black pilots were incapable of fighting in combat.

Shortly after the flyover, in which one of the three jets departed from formation, a caisson pulled by six horses carried Weathers' body to his burial spot amid hundreds of the stark marble tombstones that cover the grounds of the national cemetery. An Air Force band accompanied the wagon, its drummer thumping a solemn beat as family followed on the chilly, overcast Friday morning. Family members wore red ties and scarves, as they had at Weathers' Memphis funeral, as a nod to the aviators who painted their aircrafts' tails red to set themselves apart.

Luke Weathers III, 61, said his father and other black Americans who fought in World War II did so to prove they were men, "and then they wanted their country to love them, but that didn't happen, either." Friday's ceremony, however, finally delivered recognition of his father as a national hero, Weathers said.

This kind of attention to the Tuskegee Airmen is what the elder Weathers wanted throughout his life, said his daughter, Trina Weathers Boyce. Weathers was not vain, but he wanted to share the lessons of the airmen's courage in war, their struggles for equality and their victory over a wartime enemy and over racism, she said.

"He would talk about his hard trials and tribulations to others, to children, because he never wanted us to feel like this (racism) is a reason we couldn't make it," Weathers Boyce said in a telephone interview Thursday. "He would tell us nothing good comes easy. He'd say there are going to be barriers ... and you can overcome them."

Before the Tuskegee Airmen were formed in 1941, black men were forbidden to fly for the U.S. military, even though they could be drafted. After years of struggle, the Army Air Corps began to allow African Americans to train for flight, albeit in still-segregated units.

Many of the tens of thousands of Tuskegee airmen, which included navigators, mechanics, medical personnel and others in support roles, trained from 1941 to 1949 at the Tuskegee Institute, which was founded by Booker T. Washington and was already home to an aeronautical engineering program. In the home state of the institute, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed a proclamation honoring the airmen, saying they changed Americans attitudes about race relations.

More than 900 Tuskegee Airmen were U.S. pilots, said Trent Dudley, an Air Force lieutenant colonel who is president of the East Coast Tuskegee Airmen Inc. chapter. An estimated 250 to 300 Tuskegee airmen are still alive. The exact number is not known because some have not registered with chapters.

"As with all the airmen, when we lose one of them, there is a chunk of history that goes with them," Dudley said.

Defying social norms was already a family trait when Weathers was born in Grenada, Miss.

At the time, the town's railroad track served as the economic dividing line. Weather's mixed-race father and black mother defied that dividing line, which led them to move to Memphis, where they opened their own grocery store.

Years later, Weathers was studying biology at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., when he stumbled on an article in an international newspaper about the Tuskegee Experiment, the federal government's name for the Army Air Corps training of African Americans, Weathers Boyce said.

His mother turned to the prominent Memphis family she worked for and, with the help of the family's connections, Weathers was considered and eventually accepted into their program.

He always talked about the maneuver that save his life, Weathers Boyce said. A skillful pilot, he was a target of the Germans. In one combat flight, German aircraft were pursuing him and firing. He was forced to dip down and make a few turns in his plane to keep from getting shot, she said.

Weathers flew P-51 and P-39 fighters during his service from 1942 to 1945 and earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, according to the National Guard Bureau. He and other Tuskegee Airmen were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007.

After the war, Weathers went on to become the first African American air controller, run a coin-operated laundry, raise five children, open a flight school, provide vocational rehabilitation for veterans and write a book about his life story that has not yet been published, Weathers Boyce said.

"We are still educating people on the Tuskegee history," Weathers said, "because it's a big part of American history, not African American or black history, but American history."

IBM 4Q earnings beat estimates, revenue falls shy (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? IBM Corp.'s fourth-quarter earnings handily beat Wall Street's expectations on Thursday, helped by higher revenue and profit margins in the technology icon's lucrative software and services segments.

The results and IBM's stronger-than-expected outlook for this year sent IBM's stock up more than 2 percent after hours. The company offered a welcome sign of stability amid the global economic turmoil that's prompting worries about a slowdown in technology spending by businesses and governments, who are IBM's customers.

One sore spot was revenue, which fell short of analyst expectations; the rise in software and services revenue wasn't enough to offset a decline in hardware. Also, the stronger dollar is squeezing overseas revenue.

IBM earned $5.49 billion, or $4.62 per share, in the three months that ended Dec. 31. That's up 4 percent from $5.26 billion, or $4.25 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $4.71 per share, easily surpassing analysts' expectations of $4.61 per share.

Revenue grew 2 percent to $29.49 billion from $29.02 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected slightly higher revenue of $29.7 billion.

IBM said currency shifts since its last quarterly report in October lowered fourth-quarter revenue by about $300 million. The deepening economic crisis in Europe, along with the continuing weakness in the U.S. economy and signs of a slowdown in emerging markets are prompting worries about global companies like IBM.

But IBM has long said its long-term contracts insulate it from economic swings, and its full-year forecast is bright. IBM expects adjusted earnings of at least $14.85 per share, above the $14.77 per share that analysts are predicting.

New CEO Ginni Rometty said IBM is "well on track" toward its long-term goal of hitting at least $20 per share in adjusted earnings in 2015 ? a rare example of a long-term earnings target disclosed publicly by a such a large company.

Revenue rose at two of IBM's three largest divisions ? software by 9 percent and services by 3 percent. Hardware revenue fell 8 percent. In the third quarter, IBM's services revenue grew 8 percent, its software revenue climbed 13 percent and its hardware revenue rose 4 percent.

By geography, IBM said revenue from the Americas grew 3 percent in the fourth quarter. Revenue from Europe, the Middle East and Africa combined was up 1 percent and revenue from Asia increased 2 percent.

IBM said its new contract signings were $20.4 billion in the fourth quarter, slightly above analysts' expectations. The company's services backlog at the end of the year was $141 billion, up by $4 billion from the end of the third quarter. Services backlog refers measures the value of work under contract that the company expects to book as revenue in future quarters.

For all of 2011, IBM earned $15.86 billion, or $13.06 per share, up 7 percent from $14.83 billion, or 11.52 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $13.44 per share, above analysts' expectations of $13.36 per share.

Revenue was $106.92 billion, up 7 percent from $99.87 billion in 2010. Wall Street was expecting $107.08 billion.

The Armonk, N.Y.-based company's stock rose $4.53, or 2.5 percent, to $185.05 after hours. The stock had closed down 55 cents at $180.52.

EBay reports higher 4Q earnings, revenue (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? EBay reported on Wednesday that its net income grew sharply in the fourth quarter, helped by a gain from the sale of its remaining investment in Skype. Its results beat Wall Street's expectations, boosted by strong holiday sales at its namesake website and growth at PayPal, its online payments business.

Investors sent eBay's stock higher in after-hours trading. The company gave a first-quarter outlook that was shy of analysts' estimates. However, its guidance for the full year was stronger than expected, suggesting robust earnings momentum later in 2012.

CEO John Donahoe called 2011 an "inflection point for shopping." This means the lines between online and offline shopping are blurring, as even people who shop in retail stores are increasingly using their mobile devices to compare prices, check for deals or search for products.

If all goes as planned, that's where eBay comes in.

"For consumers and retailers, we intend to make shopping more locally convenient and more globally accessible," he said in a conference call with analysts. "This means enabling retailers of all sizes to reach consumers when, where and how those consumers want to shop."

EBay's long-term plan is to transform into a commerce company that melds the online and offline shopping worlds. As part of this effort, it has been expanding PayPal's reach beyond the Web, to mobile devices and tablets. The company is also testing a service that will let people use their PayPal accounts to shop in brick-and-mortar stores, though the program is still in the early stages.

The company earned $1.98 billion, or $1.51 per share, in the October-December quarter. That's up from $559 million, or 42 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier. Excluding special items such as the Skype gain, eBay Inc. says it earned 60 cents per share in the latest quarter, above the 57 cents that analysts were expecting.

Revenue grew 35 percent to $3.38 billion from $2.5 billion.

On average, analysts polled by FactSet expected revenue of $3.32 billion.

The e-commerce and online payments company said its PayPal business continued to grow, ending the quarter with more than 106 million active accounts. That's up 13 percent from a year earlier. Revenue jumped 28 percent to $1.24 billion and the business processed $33.4 billion worth of payments during the quarter. That's up 24 percent from a year earlier.

As more people used their smartphones and tablets to buy things online, payments made through mobile devices accounted for $4 billion of the total payments processed through PayPal ? a more than fivefold increase from the prior year.

The company's marketplaces business, which includes eBay.com and other e-commerce sites and businesses, saw its revenue grow 16 percent to $1.77 billion. Marketplaces' gross merchandise volume, an important metric that measures all items sold on eBay excluding vehicles, rose 10 percent to $16.5 billion.

EBay's outlook for the current quarter fell shy of expectations. The company expects adjusted first-quarter earnings of 50 cents to 51 cents per share on revenue of $3.05 billion to $3.15 billion. Analysts are predicting earnings of 54 cents per share on revenue of $3.16 billion.

For all of 2012, the company is forecasting adjusted earnings of $2.25 to $2.30 per share on revenue of $13.7 to $14 billion. Analysts are expecting $2 per share in earnings and $11.59 billion in revenue.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company's stock climbed 60 cents, or 2 percent, to $30.94 in after-hours trading after closing down 19 cents at $30.34.

'Jersey Shore' High Five: Coping With Vinny's Absence

Plus, the Situation's birthday tantrum and Snooki learns a new word.
By Jim Cantiello

Pauly D on Thursday's episode of "Jersey Shore"

With Vinny gone, the "Jersey Shore" cast spiraled out of control! Deena danced so hard that her hair extensions needed to be surgically removed, Snooki was half a body shot away from the morgue and the Situation "left the show" because nobody cared that it was birthday. Here are my five favorite moments from this week's "Jersey Shore":

5. A Tribute to the Fallen
This week's episode picked up where last week's left off. Vinny went home to Staten Island to calm down after his anxiety flare-ups. You know, re-charge his batteries and get away from reality-TV cameras for a while. Wait, what? MTV sent a camera crew home with him? Get better, Vinny!

Back in Seaside, Vinny's housemates paid tribute to their fallen comrade in unique ways.

Ron? "In honor of Vinny, I'm wearing skinny jeans!" Sweet! Respectful! Well done, Ron.

How about you, Pauly? "I'm gonna smash this girl in Vinny's bed in honor of Vinny leaving the house." That's ... something!

Snooki and Deena, you're up next! "Meatball day! I love gay dudes! You can dance with them, and then at the end of the night, you're not expected to give them ..." — well, you get the idea. Forget Harvey Milk. I think the gay-rights movement has a new hero.

And last but not least: the Situation, who honored Vinny by leaving the house! Except, instead of walking out for mental-health reasons, he did so because his castmates didn't make him a birthday cake. America, don't pay attention to the millionaire toddler having a temper tantrum.

4. Mrs. Sitch
Speaking of the Situation, he might be on the path to "wife-ing" perennial hookup Paula. And if it happens, I vote Sammi as maid of honor.

To quote Sammi: "I like Paula. She might be dirty and grimy and skanky and disgusting, but she's pretty cool."

To the happy couple!

3. Presented Without Comment
Deena: "I know I'm not the smartest crayon out of the box but this isn't rocket scientists. We can start a party!"

2. Snooki the Word Nerd
Snooki learned a new word! "My ass is protruding! Protruding!"

Careful, Snooks! Don't wake up the scary ancient vocabulary monster!

"It's the word of the day: 'protruding.' Let's use it all day."

JWoww asks, "In what context?"

[Cut to Madonna's "20/20" interview: "Look it up."]

Alas, the vocab monster is now awake.

1. How Do You Say "DTF" in Bosnian?
On Pauly's b-day, fellow birthday boy Mike passed off a hot Bosnian girl to his buddy. But as soon as she got back to the house, it became painfully obvious that when "Jersey Shore" airs in Bosnia, they cut out all the sex stuff.

[The Bosnian girl wants to talk all night rather than hooking up and is confused why other girls are there. Pauly gets mad, calls her a cab home and kicks her out.]

First a war, now this. Will Bosnia ever catch a break?

Northwest storm likely 'major' not 'epic'

One of the worst snowstorms in years is hitting the Pacific Northwest, closing schools and roads and cancelling flights. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reports from Seattle.

By Msnbc.com staff and wire

A major winter snow storm headed for the Pacific Northwest turned south slightly overnight and was no longer expected to hit Seattle with a foot of snow on Wednesday.

NBC meteorologist Bill Karins said the forecast had changed, with the heaviest falls of snow now expected to stay south of the Seattle area.

He said "significant" amounts, perhaps 3 to 6 inches, were still expected Wednesday morning, but said this would not an "epic" or "historical" storm.

However Karins cautioned that the Northwest in general was still experiencing a "major" snowstorm.

The National Weather Service said that it had kept "all warnings and advisories in place" but had lowered its snow totals "especially over the Seattle metro area."

Anthony Bolante / Reuters

A snowplow leads the traffic on the I-5 Interstate Highway as snow falls in Seattle Tuesday.

"Latest model runs have shifted the track of the low (pressure area) south a bit ... with major implications for snowfall amounts over western Washington," the weather service said, according to NBC News.

Schools preemptively closed in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and Bellingham, while crews salted down streets and dozens of flights were canceled as the region prepared for the storm.

Alaska Airlines announced late Tuesday that it canceled 38 flights into and out of Seattle and Portland, Ore. The airline was waiving re-booking fees for passengers traveling Tuesday through Thursday in those cities.

Conditions on the roads were expected to be dangerous as the storm was forecast to begin dumping snow on the area just before the morning rush hour.

"Wednesday is going to be a good day to stay at home," said Brad Colman, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Seattle. "The road is going to be treacherous."

Several inches of snow have the potential to paralyze the city of Seattle, which owns relatively few snowplows. Its drivers are mostly inexperienced with driving in snow or ice.

Several downtown hotels reported all their rooms were booked. Elsewhere, shoppers stocked up on groceries.

Pickup with snow plow stolen
In Everett, north of Seattle, police reported a thief broke into an Everett School District parking lot early Tuesday and drove off in an old pickup equipped with a snow plow. The faded yellow truck had the snow plow in front and a full hopper of sand in the back, Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

Snow has been falling steadily in parts of western Washington and Oregon since the weekend, but Weather Service meteorologists said the biggest amounts could be on the way.

Bec Thomas, who lives on Camano Island north of Seattle, stocked up on bottled water and food. As her children built snowmen, made snow angels and sledded in nearly a foot of fresh snow on Tuesday, she made food that could be reheated on her wood stove.

The last snowstorm knocked out her power for a week.

"We take it very seriously," said Thomas, a fine arts photographer. "We'll probably be snowed in until Thursday."

Forecasters said 3 to 6 inches of new snow could fall in the Olympia area and 1 to 2 inches north of Seattle. The Cascade Mountains could see 1 to 3 feet of new snow through late Wednesday, and officials warned of high avalanche danger there.

Dan Pelle / AP

With the incoming winter storm in mind, Don Mortenson, 77, of Spokane, Wash., looks at an aluminum snow shovel at the General Store on Tuesday.

Troopers: Be prepared
In eastern Washington, forecasters predicted that about 6 inches of snow could fall on Spokane by late Wednesday with several more inches falling Thursday. The Pullman area could see as much as 12 inches of new snow by Wednesday night.

State troopers advised motorists to be prepared.

"The No. 1 thing is to drive for the road conditions," Trooper Keith Leary said. "People need to slow down, take their time. If they're not prepared, don't get out on the roadways."

John Lee, a Mill Creek graphic designer decided to work from home Tuesday rather than face a snowy commute into Seattle, said it was "a bit exciting" because it was the first snow of the season.

But he added: "I hope it doesn't escalate to something bigger."

The Seattle Times initially described the coming bad weather as a "megastorm" in its print edition Tuesday, but then revised it to "Less snow in the forecast? It's 'evolving'" on its website later in the day.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Sony's Micro Vault MACH thumbdrives move fast, look good doing it

Sony Micro Vault MACH
120 MB/s reads and 90 MB/s writes are far from the fastest in the thumbdrive game, but they're nothing to sneeze at either. While Sony's Micro Vault MACH may not lead the pack in raw speed, it holds its own and looks damnably good doing it. The USB 3.0 stick is cased in a brushed aluminum shell and sports a red indicator LED that, if it moved, might make it look like you had a Cylon attached to your PC. The drives should be available later this month in 16, 32 and 64GB varieties, though, pricing is still a mystery. Check out the gallery below and PR after the break.
