A month after a gunman opened fire at Oikos University and left seven dead in one of California's worst mass killings, the Oakland vocational school?s nursing program lost full approval from state regulators.?
The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians on Friday placed the school?s program on provisional approval -- a form of probation.
Officials cited chronically low pass rates on licensing exams, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, among other shortcomings. Compared to the state?s average passing rate of 75% last year, the rate of Oikos graduates was 41% in 2011 and 58% in 2010. Schools should earn passing rates within 10 percentage points of the state average.
The school is looking to regain full approval with three of four students passing exams in late 2011, Oikos nursing program director Ellen Cervellon told the Chronicle.
At risk of losing its state license, the nursing program must improve on these deficiencies within the next two years.
On April 2, the school lost six nursing students and one secretary after One L. Goh, 43, allegedly opened fire in a classroom. He was arrested a few miles away about two hours after the shooting.
Goh pleaded not guilty April 30 to seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
