Texas Rangers see fans drawn to new amenities for opening weekend

Increased amenities and more points of sale made for a good opening weekend at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

The Texas Rangers saw an average of more than 48,000 fans drawn to its expanded amenities and offerings at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington for opening weekend against the Chicago White Sox.

The Rangers' expanded amenities include about 50 additional points of sale, including the Captain Morgan Club that recently signed a sponsorship deal, said Rob Matwick, executive vice president of ballpark operations for the Rangers.

"The new spaces have been well received by the fans," Matwick said. "For the first weekend we did well, and we look forward to improve on that."

The Rangers did not have the exact sales numbers Monday morning.

Despite about 800 fewer seats in the Ballpark because of remodeling, the sales numbers were expected to grow based on the increased points of sale for fans, he said.

For the 2012-13 season, there were 4,000 more season ticket holders than last year, Matwick said.

"We have 21,000 season ticket holders, which is the highest number of season ticket holders that we've ever had," he said.

Along with increased amenities, he said, the Rangers have added more air-conditioned areas for fans and a covered deck area to help the fans weather the Texas heat.

The Rangers, with Yu Darvish on the mound, take on the Seattle Mariners tonight at The Ballpark.
