Logitech president celebrates end-of-year earnings with management cull

Logitech's Q4 and full-year report makes for uncomfortable reading. Despite profits increasing by a factor of nine in the last quarter of the year, overall annual profit fell 44 percent from $143 million to $71 million. The company has already parachuted in former Whirlpool exec. Bracken P. Darrel to turn things around and recover the losses made when the company went big on Google TV. His first action has been to kick-start a restructuring operation that will save $80 million in costs, starting by cutting a whole management layer -- demoting current product VP Junien Labrousse and firing sales VP Werner Heid. Mr. Darrell is now working directly with his team on a new lineup of "stronger" products to be unveiled later this quarter, with an emphasis on Windows 8 peripherals and LifeSize video conferencing gear.

Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight shipping this week, B&N warns of limited supply

Image

So much for waiting until May to get your hands on some glowing, Nooky goodness. Barnes & Noble let us know today that the admittedly somewhat clunkily named Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is slipping out ahead of schedule. The light up e-reader starts shipping this week for those who've already pre-ordered a unit and will continue to ship throughout the month. Apparently in-store units will be a bit fewer and further between, however -- the company announced that the device will be available in "limited quantities" when it hits stores early next month. So, if you don't want to make your mom cry this Mother's Day, the company's recommending that you jump on the pre-order bandwagon soonish. Of course, it couldn't hurt to give our review a peek first, just to make sure.

Kandi rips Marlo in Atlanta 'Housewives' reunion

Bravo

Cynthia Bailey was caught in the middle as Marlo Hampton (left) and Kandi Burruss (right) fought on the final installment of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" reunion special.

By Ree Hines

If you thought "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" got all the feuding and fighting out of their systems during the first two parts of the reunion special, think again. On Sunday night, part three proved that the ladies of the South haven't reached a cease-fire in their war of words.

In fact, they're far from it. On the heels of the battle between NeNe Leakes and Sheree Whitfield and the blowout between Kim Zolciak and Marlo Hampton came a matchup no one anticipated: Marlo vs. Kandi Burruss.

It even came as a shock to reunion host Andy Cohen, who tweeted, "I didn't see this fight btwn Marlo and Kandi coming" as it aired.

It all started calmly enough when Kandi was reminded that Marlo once called her a "sugar mama," which Kandi dismissed as a laughing matter -- at least at first.

But when Marlo pressed the point, asking whether or not Kandi's current main man works or if he lives with her and drives her car, the calm came to an end.

"I wasn't even going to be mean ... but now you wanna come at me?" Kandi asked before swapping between bouts of defending her man and attempting to put Marlo in her place -- all while letting the expletives fly.

Check out the bleep-filled scene for yourself in the clip below:

Comments - Conglomerate Blog: Business, Law, Economics & Society

Posted by Robert B. Thompson

Less than two years after the Dodd Frank Act added hundreds of pages of new rules for securities law and financial regulation more generally, we have new securities regulation of a decidedly deregulatory bent. President Obama signed the JOBS Act (the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act) on April 5, 2012 and the results will immediately affect those who teach either securities regulation or corporations courses. In a series of posts that follow, Joan Heminway and I will address key aspects of the new legislation including : (1) amendments to Section 12(g) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 raising the threshold for this gateway to reporting status from 500 shareholders of record to 2000 shareholders of record or 500 unaccredited shareholders; (2) the ?on-ramp? which will free most companies doing an Initial Public Offering from having to comply with a whole series of obligations of reporting companies for up to five years after their public offering; and (3) crowdfunding which seeks to facilitate capital raising by permitting issuers to raise up to $ 1 million without having to comply with the core provisions of the Securities Act of 1933. This post provides a brief introduction and a bit of history underlying the act?s development and passage.

In a period in which the news has brought us numerous examples of Republicans and Democrats not able to agree on legislative policy, it is surprising that securities regulation has been a point of bi-partisan agreement in an election year. The JOBS Act received almost 400 votes in the House and passed the Senate 73-26. What explains such success? In part, it is the opening left by the unpleasantness of the 2011 debt ceiling and budget fiascos; both parties had some incentive to show they could agree on something. Nurturing capital raising was easily subsumed within the label of job creation which remains the more salient tag line for this election cycle. And never underestimate the value of a catchy acronym in the passage of legislation. When six different pieces of legislation, with sometimes long and nondescript names, got bundled within a single bill that could be described as the JOBS Act, prospects of passage improved. It probably also mattered that securities regulation was relatively unimportant to legislators, as compared to the debt ceiling or even changes to transportation or aviation regulations, so that once the bill gained momentum, serious opposition could not gain traction.

The timeline for the bill begins in the aftermath of the passage of Dodd Frank in 2010 and the success of Republicans in elections later that year, but the intellectual origins date back much longer. When Republicans gained control of the House and its committees, they held hearings on a series of deregulatory bills in securities, including crowdfunding, which in some sense reflects the ideas of microfinancing that have grown around the world in recent times. Congressman Darrell Issa, chair of an important committee, and SEC Chair Mary Shapiro exchanged letters in the spring of 2011 with the congressman pushing for a series of deregulatory changes and the SEC?s head setting out a series of possible agency actions. One of the issues the congressman raised related to Facebook which, in the winter of 2010-2011, explored ways to stay longer in its unregulated status before making an IPO. In addition there had been discussions ever since the bursting of the dot.com bubble at the turn of the century that the United States was suffering from a decline in its share of IPOs, an issue that had the attention of New York?s senators. In the fall of 2011 a private task force, with strong Silicon Valley representation, proposed the on-ramp. President Obama came out in support of the reform effort. Although institutional groups and Mary Shaprio raised concerns about the changes, the bill was on its way to passage. Opponents of the bill could not get the supermajority 60 votes necessary to block consideration of an alternative bill in the Senate, achieving only amendments to the crowdfunding provisions that added additional fraud protections for issuers and platforms.

Thus we have a bill that provides the first change in the public/private line of 1934 Act in almost half century, a dramatic bifurcation of regulation for 1934 Act reporting companies, and new freedom for smallest issuers in raising funds. Details will be discussed in subsequent posts.

'Girls' Shows Unsexy Side Of Sex

In second episode, Lena Dunham's HBO series continues to highlight emotionally fraught encounters.
By Amy Wilkinson, with additional reporting by Kara Warner

Lena Dunham in "Girls"
Photo: HBO

If last week's "Girls" premiere — in which Hannah (Lena Dunham) and Adam (Adam Driver) got uncomfortably coital on a couch — raised a few eyebrows, then Sunday's "Vagina Panic" likely blew them clean off.

The episode opened on Hannah and Adam naked and frantically in the throes of something we think might be passion — an awkward hook-up made even more so when Adam insisted upon a fantasy in which he was a drug dealer and Hannah was an 11-year-old girl he found on the street carrying a Cabbage Patch lunch box. That scenario likely told you everything you needed to know about the encounter, which ended with Adam offering Hannah an orange Gatorade.

If audiences felt uncomfortable during the intimate moment, Dunham did her job, which she recently told MTV News is to examine the often emotionally fraught relationships we embark upon in our 20s.

"It's definitely going to evoke the feeling like, 'Why is this self-respecting woman doing this, and if so, is she a self-respecting woman?' But I do think that relationship statuses are becoming more and more ambiguous in our modern Facebook, texting, Twitter world," she said. "And those relationships need to be explored because those relationships can be really interesting and can also be damaging, to have these relationships with someone who you don't understand how invested in you they are."

But even emotionally invested relationships have their nadirs, including the fizzling romance between Marnie (Allison Williams) and Charlie (Christopher Abbott). In stark contrast to Hannah and Adam's energetic display, the longtime couple couldn't have been less enthused about what they were doing between the sheets.

"It's like I don't even know how to make love to you anymore," Charlie lamented the next morning.

"He's so busy respecting me, he looks right past me," Marnie later confided to Hannah.

But Hannah had other concerns besides Marnie's lackluster love life. With her persistent "Forrest Gump"-based fear of AIDS and Adam's admission that he didn't always use condoms, Hannah decided she should get an STD test while accompanying Jessa (Jemima Kirke) to her abortion — an abortion, it turned out, Jessa didn't need, as she got her period while being felt up by a random guy in a bar. Hannah did have her STD test, though, and we'll find out those results next week.

But perhaps the most intriguing sex story line from "Vagina Panic" was the one that didn't involve sex at all. Visibly embarrassed, Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) confided to Marnie that she is, in fact, a virgin. "Seriously, it's like everyone and their mother has had sex but me," she complained.

"I hit a puppy once with my car. I only had my learner's permit," Marnie offered, not sure what else to say.

And so it would seem that whether you're having lots of sex or none at all, sex is and always will be a messy, complicated affair.

Antonio Silva to face Cain Velasquez at UFC 146

When Frank Mir was given a title shot at UFC 146 in place of Alistair Overeem, several dominoes started to fall in the UFC heavyweight division. Mir was supposed to face Cain Velasquez in Las Vegas on May 26. Since he's fighting Junior dos Santos, Velasquez will face Antonio "Big Foot" Silva, who will be making his UFC debut after a career in Strikeforce and Elite XC. Roy Nelson, who was supposed to fight Silva, is now opponent-less, but is expected to remain on the card.

Got that?

As it stands now, UFC 146 still has an all-heavyweight main card, but the UFC has to scramble to find an opponent for Nelson for a bout that is just 34 days away. Here are all the main card bouts:

Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir
Antonio Silva vs. Cain Velasquez
Roy Nelson vs. TBA
Shane Del Rosario vs. Gabriel Gonzaga
Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve

Diablo 3 beta throws open doors, this weekend only

Diablo 3, the much-anticipated fantasy game, is scheduled for launch in North America on May 15. In the meantime, you can get your hands on the?Diablo 3?beta version.

Diablo 3: One of the most eagerly-anticipated games in recent memory, and also one of the most frequently delayed. Horizons readers will remember that back in September of last year,?Blizzard announced that Diablo 3, originally slated to arrive in 2011, would be held until early 2012 ? enough time for the developer to polish up the gameplay.?

"[T]his week we pulled together people from all of the teams involved with the game to decide whether we felt it would be ready before the end of December, and we grudgingly came to the conclusion that it would not," a Blizzard exec wrote at the time. "Ultimately, we feel that to deliver an awesome Diablo sequel that lives up to our expectations and yours as well, we should take a little more time and add further polish to a few different elements of the game."

Since then, Blizzard has finalized a May 15 North America launch date for Diablo 3.?

This week comes news that Blizzard will stage an open beta event for Diablo 3, a kind of "stress test" for the forthcoming fantasy title. VentureBeat?reports?that the beta test will extend from Friday afternoon to 1 p.m. EST on Monday. Anyone with a valid?Battle.net account is invited to play (excepting folks in the?Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau markets, who are getting a separate beta event, on April 23).

You can get started here.?

Diablo 3, like Diablo 2 and the original Diablo, will take place in the the murky, shadowy world of Sanctuary. Among the playable character classes are the newly-introduced "monks" ? "priest-warriors who follow the divine injunctions of their Patriarchs, the rulers of Ivgorod," according to Blizzard. Sounds like some good, geeky fun to us.?
