Saboteurs blow up Egypt gas pipeline to Jordan, Israel (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Saboteurs blew up Egypt's gas pipeline to Jordan and Israel on Monday, witnesses and security sources said, a few hours before the country holds its first free election since President Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February.

The explosion struck the pipeline west of al-Arish in Sinai, witnesses said. There was a second consecutive blast, about 100 meters away, sources said.

State news agency MENA said the explosion was in al-Sabeel area. Security forces and fire trucks raced to the scene.

Security sources said the explosions were detonated from a distance and that tracks from two vehicles were found in the area. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The pipeline, which supplies gas to Jordan and Israel, was last attacked on November 25. It is the eighth such attack since Mubarak stepped down on February 11. It is the ninth this year, with the first attack a few days before Mubarak was toppled.

Egypt's 20-year gas deal with Israel, signed in the Mubarak era, is unpopular with the Egyptian public, with critics arguing that the Jewish state does not pay enough for the gas.

An executive of the East Mediterranean Gas Co (EMG), which exports Egyptian gas to Israel, said in July that international shareholders in the firm were pursuing legal claims against Egypt for $8 billion in damages from contract violations in gas supplies, following disruptions caused by pipeline attacks.

Egypt doubled the price of gas exported to Jordan last month. Petroleum Minister Abdullah Ghorab said the new price was just above $5 per million BTU, up from $2.15 to $2.30.

The government said this month it would tighten security measures along the pipeline by installing alarm devices and recruiting security patrols from Bedouin tribesmen.

2 new radio stations in Zimbabwe get licenses (AP)

HARARE, Zimbabwe ? Two Zimbabwe commercial radio stations were issued licenses to compete for the first time with the sole government-owned broadcaster loyal to the president, Zimbabwe's state broadcasting authority said Friday.

But the independent Media Institute of Southern Africa said the new stations were not fairly chosen because the licensing decisions were made by officials appointed by the information ministry controlled by President Robert Mugabe's party.

Zimbabwe Newspapers, publishers of the main pro-Mugabe daily Herald, will launch a Talk Radio channel. The second channel, ZiFM, is controlled by a black empowerment campaigner and stalwart of Mugabe's party who says it will go on air within six months.

A coalition deal with the former opposition in 2009 called for an end to the three-decade monopoly of Mugabe's Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corp. No commercial broadcast licenses have been issued since independence from colonial-era rule in 1980.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party on Friday described the licensing decisions as an unacceptable betrayal of the power sharing deal.

"This is a sad day for the media and showcases the brazen and deliberate undermining" of Tsvangirai's authority in the coalition, his spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka said.

ZiFM is owned by a media firm headed by Supa Mandiwanzira, also a one-time journalist and presenter at state television. Mandiwanzira was named by Mugabe's party as a likely parliamentary candidate for elections proposed next year, Tamborinyoka said.

Zimbabwe Newspapers is a private company listed on the Harare stock exchange, but the government has owned the majority stockholding since the 1980s when Mugabe's party took a tight rein on its journalists.

The southern Africa media institute, which campaigns for media freedoms, said the legal status of the new licenses was in doubt. It cited irregularities in the appointment of the board of the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe, the body that issued the licenses.

The board is chaired by Tafataona Mahoso, former head of the state media commission that enforced draconian media curbs before the formation of the coalition between Mugabe and Tsvangirai. Zimbabwe's government coalition was formed after violent and disputed elections in 2008.

For nearly a decade, Mahoso was widely described by critics as Mugabe's media "hatchet man."

The independent Harare-based Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe said Friday the selection of just two of several wide-ranging applications for private broadcasting licenses was not carried out transparently and broadcast laws governing the powers and membership of the authority weighing in Mugabe's favor needed reform.

"Until we have an independent broadcasting authority and democratic broadcast laws we will continue to have this sort of conflict," said Takura Zhangazha, head of the council.

Report: Agent says Milan is first choice for Tevez

By DANIELLA MATAR

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:55 a.m. ET Nov. 26, 2011

MILAN (AP) -Carlos Tevez's agent says a move to AC Milan is the Argentina striker's preferred option as he seeks to end a controversial spell at Manchester City, according to an Italian newspaper.

Kia Joorabchian had a two-hour meeting with Milan vice president Adriano Galliani at the club's headquarters on Thursday.

"It was a constructive dialogue which left me feeling happy," Joorabchian was quoted as saying in an interview published Saturday in Gazzetta dello Sport. "Milan is the best solution at the moment, his first choice. Carlos wants to wear the Milan shirt."

City manager Roberto Mancini has said that Tevez's decision to return to Argentina without permission had ended any hope the forward had of playing for the Premier League club again.

Tevez has still not returned to Manchester and recently missed a scheduled meeting with the Premier League leaders to discuss his future.

Mancini refused to answer questions about the matter in his weekly news conference Friday, emphatically stating, "I do not want to speak about Carlos Tevez."

Tevez has not played since apparently refusing an instruction from Mancini to warm up during a Champions League game against Bayern Munich in September.

City fined Tevez four weeks' wages last month but was forced to halve it after England's players' union intervened.

"In reality the problem is only with Mancini, not with the club," Joorabchian added. "Carlos has been clear with the club, the only consequence was a fine.

"However, it's obvious they're interested in resolving the situation."

Massimiliano Allegri's team is not the only option in Italy for Tevez. Juventus is also said to be interested but a meeting with the player's representatives on Friday was reportedly postponed.

Inter Milan had an offer rejected by City in the summer according to Joorabchian. Inter coach Claudio Ranieri is remaining coy on whether the club is planning to renew its efforts in January.

"Are you convinced Inter isn't interested in Tevez?" Ranieri said Saturday. "I've aroused your suspicions now by saying that."

Tevez is under contract with City until 2014. It will reportedly cost ?4 million ($5.3 million) to take the 27-year-old forward on loan and a further ?20 million ($26.5 million) to make the transfer permanent in the summer. A stumbling block could be the wages, with Tevez earning around ?10 million ($13.2 million) a season at City.

"I don't think problems should be talked about with his wages seeing as all big players earn high salaries," Joorabchian said. "However, we didn't talk about the economic aspect with Galliani."

Milan is hunting for a striker, with Antonio Cassano set to miss the rest of the season as he recovers from heart surgery.

Tevez, however, would not be eligible for the Champions League after featuring for City against Napoli at the beginning of the campaign.

Tevez has long been linked with a move to Italy, despite the Argentina striker saying several times he wishes to return to South America to be closer to his family, including his two daughters who live with his wife in Buenos Aires.

The 2009 recruit from Manchester United was City's top scorer during its run to the FA Cup title last year that ended a 35-year trophy drought.

However, the season was not without controversy for the City captain after he handed in a written transfer request in December, saying that his relationship with "certain executives and individuals at the club" was beyond repair.

Tevez later retracted his request but seemed destined to leave the club during the summer.

Despite saying he would not return to Manchester even for a holiday, he failed in his attempts to secure a transfer in the offseason back to Brazilian club Corinthians, which he left in 2006 to join West Ham.

Merkel, Sarkozy, Monti meet to try to stem crisis (AP)

STRASBOURG, France ? The leaders of Germany, France and Italy are set for debate on the European Central Bank's role in the region's debt crisis and on how to align eurozone economic policies.

It's the first time Italy's new prime minister, Mario Monti, is meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy since Monti took charge last week, amid market panic about Italy's huge debts.

The meeting in Strasbourg, France on Thursday comes amid signs that even Germany and France ? the eurozone's biggest economies, and key to bailouts of weaker countries ? are also under strain.

Sarkozy's government is pushing for the ECB to play a more active role, something that Merkel strongly opposes.

(AP) ? A Russian businessman who owns Portsmouth Football Club and has tried to invest in cash-strapped car maker Saab has been arrested in London in connection with a money laundering probe that has rocked Lithuania and Latvia, officials said Friday.

Vladimir Antonov, 36, and a Lithuanian partner, Raimondas Baranauskas, 53, were detained Thursday on an arrest warrant issued by investigators probing alleged fraud and money laundering at his banks in the Baltic states, Lithuanian prosecutor Tomas Krusna told reporters.

The Bank of Lithuania said late Thursday that his bank there, Snoras Bank, will be liquidated, calling it the best solution for country's financial system and economy, which were jolted after the bank was nationalized and its operations halted.

Lithuanian regulators claim that hundreds of millions of euros were siphoned from Snoras, the country's fifth-largest financial institution, while Latvian authorities have said that similar asset-stripping took place on a massive scale at Latvija Krajbanka, a subsidiary bank controlled by Snoras.

Lithuanian bank chief Vitas Vasiliauskas said the government was liquidating the bank rather than waste taxpayers' money trying to help "a plane that won't fly."

"There is no other way to solve this situation," he said.

The decision to liquidate Snoras means that Latvijas Krajbanka, which Snoras controls through a 68 percent stake, is almost certain to suffer the same fate given Latvia's meager financial resources as it emerges from one of the world's worst recessions.

When asked about Antonov's arrest, London police read a statement saying that two men ? age 36 and 53 ? were arrested in response to a Europe-wide arrest warrant in London's financial center. British officials do not name suspects until they have been charged.

Police said the two men remained in custody overnight and are due to appear in a London court later Friday.

Lithuanian prosecutors on Wednesday issued the warrant for Antonov, who owned over 60 percent of Snoras, and Baranauskas.

Antonov told the Lithuanian daily Respublika in a phone interview published Thursday that he feared for his life.

"I returned to London because I live and work here ? my family is here. Where else can I go? Russia? That would be a one-way ticket. I would have to stay there for safety, but this would be considered an escape attempt," he said.

"I am ready to testify...I understand that extradition is inevitable. I can say it openly ? I am scared that I may get killed," Antonov said.

Latvian officials had hoped that Lithuania's government might be able to salvage the banks, and Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis was due to travel to Lithuania on Friday on discuss the issue. However, once news of Snoras' liquidation broke, Dombrovskis canceled the trip.

Lithuania's Finance Ministry said Friday that they would pay out all guaranteed deposits ? up to euro100,000 ($132,000) ? at Snoras by Christmas ? requiring some 4 billion litas ($1.5 billion) in funds.

Latvia's government was due to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the fate of Latvijas Krajbanka.

Authorities in both Lithuania and Latvia say the two banks' collapse does not pose a systemic risk since they are mid-sized and the two states have ample reserves to guarantee deposits.

Latvijas Krajbanka was Latvia's 10th largest bank by assets after it was taken over by regulators on Monday.

Janis Brazovskis, an official with Latvia's Finance and Capital Markets Commission who was appointed to oversee Krajbanka, said Wednesday that Antonov's failed attempt to acquire the troubled Swedish automaker Saab might have triggered the Baltic banks' downfall.

He said that approximately 100 million lats ($200 million) were siphoned from the bank to increase its charter capital and finance Antonov's investment projects ? including the unsuccessful takeover of Saab.

Deposit holders in both countries are now forced to wait in long lines to withdraw money from cash machines, while companies and municipalities have seen the working capital virtually disappear.

Baranauskas, who owned just over 25 percent in Snoras, said last week that Lithuania's decision to nationalize Snoras was "robbery" and an attack on Antonov.

AUTOMOTIVE - VINTAGE: Maserati's Refined Mid-Engine GT

One of the first projects started after Citro?n acquired Maserati in 1968 was the development of a mid-engine sports car. While the company had been one of Italy's first manufacturers to produce a mid-engine race car back in 1961, Maserati had to leave road-car honors to the likes of Lamborghini and DeTomaso with such cars as the Miura and Mangusta, respectively.

Styling was key for any Italian sports car at the time, and to an extent still is, so Maserati called in the help of one of the best in the business for the design of the new car: Giorgietto Giugiaro. Having recently set up shop for himself under the Italdesign banner, Giugiaro had previously worked for Maserati as head of design for Ghia with the Ghibli as his finest work.

The Giugiaro-designed Bora was unveiled at the 1971 Gevena Motor Show. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) Maserati asked Giugiaro to combine the mid-engine layout with the creature comforts and luggage space of a conventional Grand Tourer.

Nearly two years in the making, the new Maserati Bora was finally launched at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Giugiaro's design combined the some classic Maserati elements with the lines of the Alfa Romeo based Iguana show car first shown at the 1969 Turin Motor Show. The subtle wedge shape was dominated by a brushed stainless-steel roof and a sizeable engine cover that included a substantial amount of glass. Pop-up headlights were fitted, which gave the Bora a very clean look.

Under the skin, the Bora sported a central monocoque chassis with subframes front and rear to support the suspension and drivetrain. Like the rest of the car, the suspension was thoroughly modern with double wishbones and coil springs all-round.

Parent company Citro?n provided its superb high-pressure hydraulic power brake system. The first cars were fitted with solid discs, which were later replaced by internally ventilated examples. In similar vein the early recirculating-ball steering was substituted by rack-and-pinion.

Bora was powered by a 4.7-liter aluminum V8 that produced 210 horsepower and propelled the aerodynamic car to 74 mph. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) The Bora's mid-mounted engine was Maserati's familiar twin-cam V8, which had originally been developed for the company's great sports racers of the 1950s. In the Bora specification, the all-aluminum engine displaced just over 4.7 liters and featured single-spark ignition. Breathing through four Weber carburetors, it produced around 310 horsepower, transferred to the rear wheels by a five-speed manual gearbox. The very potent engine and slippery body enabled the Bora to achieve speeds of up to 174 mph.

Although introduced early in 1971, Bora production did not start in earnest until the end of the year. Compared with its rivals, the new Maserati was remarkably comfortable and quiet, and at the same time had very competitive performance figures and characteristics.

As the first cars rolled off the line, development continued and in addition to the earlier changes, a slightly larger version of the V8 was added as an option in 1975. At 4.9 liters, it produced both a little more horsepower and torque, and most importantly, it was already homologated in the United States.

At the end of 1972, Maserati's French importer Thepenier requested a competition version to race in the Tour de France and at Le Mans. Two cars, fitted with a dry-sump, high compression version of the 4.9-liter V8, were prepared by the relatively small staff in Modena. Built to Group 4 regulations, the car was immediately competitive, but its career was cut short due to homologation problems as well as financial issues.

When properly sorted, the Bora could have formed a real threat for the Ferrari Daytonas and Porsche 911s.

Retailers hope holiday shoppers defy economy

Astrid Stawiarz / Getty Images

It's beginning to look a lot like the holiday shopping season at stores like Macy's Herald Square in New York.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

With the unemployment rate stuck above 9 percent and housing prices heading lower again, many American households have little to celebrate. But that doesn?t seem to have dampened expectations for?a relatively strong?holiday shopping season.

?The last thing parents cut back on is Christmas presents for their child,? said Toys R Us CEO Gerald Storch. ??So Christmas always comes.?

After a rough year, retail sales have already begun to perk up well before the unofficial Black Friday start of the shopping season the day after Thanksgiving. Consumer spending rose?0.5?percent?in October after a?1.1 percent increase in September as sales rose on?everything?from big-ticket electronics to sporting goods to books, according to the Commerce Department.

?Households may not be in especially celebratory mood, but they do seem willing to ramp up purchases in the final months of the year," said Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group.

The National Retail Federation is looking for an ?average? holiday shopping season ? up 2.8 percent ? after a surprisingly strong 5.2 percent gain in 2010. That would be just a bit better than the 10-year average increase of 2.6 percent.

Some retailers are even more upbeat.

?We?re very encouraged and very confident about the holiday season," said Macy's spokesman Jim Sluzewski. ?We?ve told Wall Street to expect our sales to be up?4 percent to 4.5 percent in the fourth quarter. That?s relatively consistent with the sales increase we?ve seen all year."

Profit increases may be harder to come by, especially for discount retailers attempting to win over cash-strapped households. Discounters are?expected?to fight to gain?market share by paring prices to the bone.

Global retail giant Wal-Mart signaled what shoppers, and its competitors, can expect with?quarterly?results that showed profits fell? even as?sales rose. Rivals Target and Costco will have to respond to Wal-Mart's aggressive cost-cutting or risk losing sales, said Deborah Weinswig, Citi?Investment Research retail analyst.

?You?re seeing Wal-Mart take a very aggressive stand on pricing,? she said. ?We?re seeing a very new Wal-Mart and they are taking no prisoners.?

Department store chains are?turning to exclusive brands to avoid the increasingly intense price competition on items sold elsewhere. Kohl?s said its 20 percent boost in third-quarter profits was helped by strong demand for its exclusive Jennifer Lopez line. About half the company?s sales come from private label or exclusive brands, up from a quarter in 2004. Macy?s is relying on exclusive brands Tommy Hilfiger, Martha Stewart and Armani jeans to boost its bottom line.

As in years past, retailers have worked hard to better manage the supply of goods. If they order too much, they either have to?slash prices more, which cuts into?profits, or risk getting stuck with unsold merchandise. If they order too little, and their customers can?t find what they?re looking for, they?ll shop elsewhere.

Getting the right balance was even more difficult as widespread uncertainty about the economic outlook this summer prompted retailers to keep inventories lean. That could reduce the need for heavy promotional price-cutting, especially among high-end retailers with evergreen luxury brands.

?I think shoppers are always looking for a deal,? said Lord & Taylor CEO Brendan Hoffman. ?But I don?t think you'll see super-deep discounts as compared to the last couple of years. The world's gotten promotional over the last few years and will continue to be so this year, but probably not noticeably more than over the last few years.?

The recent uptick in retail sales volume comes as consumers have begun to catch a bit of a break, which could help ease the pressure on holiday shopping budgets. Overall, prices fell in October ?- largely due to a hefty 3.1 percent drop in gasoline prices ?- the first monthly decline since June. Weekly earnings also bumped up last month, by 0.3 percent, though they?re still 1.7 percent below last year.

Retailers have also continued to ramp up online sales, which still make up a small portion of overall sales. But online shopping is growing more than twice as fast as in-store sales. More than two-thirds of retailers expected their e-commerce revenues to grow 15 percent or more, according to a survey by NRF's Shop.org division. Online giant Amazon posted a 44 percent increase in sales in the third quarter, helped by strong demand for its new Kindle Fire e-reader, which is expected to boost holiday sales.

To better reel in online shoppers, retailers have spruced up websites, created apps for mobile devices and turned to social media to try to extend the reach of their promotions. Three-quarters said they were expanding their presence on Facebook and 45 percent are boosting their Twitter presence. About a third said they plan to?use a variety of digital channels to reach out to consumers with daily offers of deals and other promotions

More than 40 percent said they planned to offer free shipping, which has helped boost traffic for?shipping companies. FedEx expects to ship record volume this holiday season: more than 260 million shipments, a 12 percent increase from 2010, between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The company expects shipments to peak at 17 million packages on its busiest day, which it figures will come on Dec. 12. That's 10 percent more than its busiest day last year. UPS has been more cautious in its forecasting, saying much depends on the turnout for the last two weeks of the season.

How much do you plan to spend on the holidays this year?

A look at the people who will actually be out shopping next Friday, as well as the hot trends this year, like comparison shopping, with CNBC's Courtney Reagan.

US, Britain, Canada slap new sanctions on Iran

The United States, Britain and Canada announced fresh plans Monday to sanction Iran's financial and energy sectors, steps analysts said would raise pressure on Tehran but were unlikely to halt its atomic program.

The United States named Iran as an area of "primary money laundering concern," a step designed to isolate its banking sector; blacklisted 11 entities and individuals suspected of aiding its nuclear programs; and expanded sanctions to target companies that help develop its oil and petrochemical industries.

The United States stopped short, however, of targeting Iran's central bank, a step that could have cut it off from the global financial system, sent oil prices skyrocketing and jeopardized U.S. and European economic recovery.

Russia dismissed the new sanctions as "unacceptable" on Tuesday and said they would hurt the chances of renewing talks with Tehran over its nuclear program.

A sharply worded Russian statement underscored Moscow's longstanding opposition to sanctions beyond those endorsed by the United Nations Security Council, where Russia holds veto power as a permanent member.

"We again underline that the Russian Federation considers such extraterritorial measures unacceptable and contradictory to international law," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

It indicated that despite agreement last week on a U.N. nuclear agency board resolution that expressed increasing concern about Iran's nuclear program, Russia differs sharply with the West on how to win Tehran's cooperation.

"Such practices ... seriously complicate efforts for constructive dialogue with Tehran," Lukashevich said.

The range of unilateral steps planned by Western powers reflects the difficulty of persuading Russia and China not to veto further measures at the U.N. Security Council, where they have supported four previous sanctions resolutions.

British ban
Britain on Monday banned dealings with Iranian banks including the central bank and France called for measures on an "unprecedented scale" over Tehran's nuclear program.

Canada said it would ban the export of all goods used in Iran's petrochemical, oil and gas industry and "block virtually all transactions with Iran," including with its central bank, with an exception for Iranian-Canadians to send money home.

The steps come in response to a Nov. 8 report by the International Atomic Energy Agency that presented intelligence suggesting Iran had worked on designing an atomic bomb and may still be secretly carrying out related research. Iran says its nuclear work is entirely peaceful.

In a statement, President Barack Obama said that as long as Iran continues down a dangerous path with its nuclear program, the United States will continue to find ways to isolate and increase the pressure on Tehran.

Obama says Iran's actions jeopardize international peace and stability. Still, he says the U.S. is still prepared to start a new chapter with Iran if it fulfills its international obligations. But if it continues to defy its responsibilities, he says Iran faces even more pressure.

Analysts said they did not believe the steps would change the Iranian calculation on its nuclear program, which Washington and its allies suspect is a cover for seeking nuclear arms.

"Is this the straw that will break the camel's back? No," said George Perkovich, director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington think tank.

"The administration is testing the proposition as to whether there is a point at which the sanctions can lead the Iranians to a tipping point, recognizing that the likelihood is low," said Rob Danin of the Council on Foreign Relations.

While Britain ordered its financial institutions to stop all business with Iran, a source familiar with the sanctions said the steps would not directly target trade in Iranian oil.

"We believe that the Iranian regime's actions pose a significant threat to the UK's national security and the international community. Today's announcement is a further step to preventing the Iranian regime from acquiring nuclear weapons," said British finance minister George Osborne.

The U.S. decision to name Iran as a money laundering concern has no direct effect ? U.S. banks are already barred from transactions with Iranian financial institutions ? and seemed more a warning about the risks of dealing with Iran.

'Isolation'
EU governments could reach a preliminary deal on Tuesday to add about 190 Iranian people and entities to a list of those targeted by asset freezes and travel bans, diplomats said.

But France called for much stronger action.

"As Iran steps up its nuclear program, refuses negotiation and condemns its people to isolation, France advocates new sanctions on an unprecedented scale to convince Iran that it must negotiate," said a statement from President Nicolas Sarkozy's office.

"France therefore proposes to the European Union and its member states, the United States, Japan and Canada and other willing countries to take the decision to immediately freeze the assets of the Iranian central bank (and) stop purchases of Iranian oil," it added.

The new EU measures will likely target industries such as shipping and will be formalized at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Dec. 1, but discussions on possible further steps could take place in the coming days, diplomats said.

Immune cells function beyond battle

Communications with collaborators in gut influence fat uptake

Web edition : 5:06 pm

The immune system isn?t just about defense; it works in partnership with other cells to regulate body functions.

A new study shows that immune cells called B cells carry on a three-way conversation with gut microbes and cells lining the intestines to control fat uptake. The finding, reported online November 20 in Nature Medicine, challenges conventional wisdom that the immune system?s only job is to fight bad guys. The new knowledge also may shed some light on why people with HIV and other chronic infections become malnourished, and it might suggest ways to treat malnutrition.

The study grew out of a comment that systems biologist Andrey Morgun, now a researcher at Oregon State University in Corvallis, once heard at an immunology conference. ?A speaker mentioned that the immune system isn?t just a war machine,? Morgun says.

For Morgun and his wife and research partner, Natalia Shulzhenko, also now at Oregon State, the idea was intriguing. Both had training in clinical immunology, where the immune system is thought of as a protective mechanism, not something involved in daily life outside the disease process, Morgun says. While working at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Md., the couple convinced their research adviser there, immunologist Polly Matzinger, that the idea was worth testing.

Other researchers have noted that mice lacking antibody-producing B cells have abnormal digestive systems. In particular, the mice have difficulty absorbing fat from the diet and become malnourished. In the new study, Morgun and Shulzhenko discovered that B cells? ability to make a type of antibody called immunoglobulin A, or IgA, is important for fat uptake. IgA is secreted in tears, saliva, milk and mucus, and helps cells lining the intestine maintain a healthy relationship with friendly bacteria.

The researchers reared mice without B cells in a sterile environment so the mice also lacked gut bacteria. The mice didn?t have a problem absorbing fat, despite their lack of immune cells. That told the researchers that intestinal microbes are involved in the process, but exactly what the microbes do to change fat uptake is still unknown.

A closer look at cells lining the intestine, called epithelial cells, showed that those cells have two jobs ? self-defense and metabolism, including absorbing fat. Somehow, IgA antibodies produced by B cells trigger gut microbes to send a signal to the epithelial cells. Those cells then determine whether to devote more resources to protecting themselves, by making antimicrobial compounds, or to carry on absorbing fat and other nutrients from food. ??

Andrew Gewirtz, an immunologist at Georgia State University in Atlanta, draws a comparison between this newly identified role for the immune system and community services such as crowd control performed by the police: ?The police don?t just show up when there?s a crime.?

Intestinal epithelial cells taken from people who have immune defects, such as those caused by HIV or a genetic condition called common variable immunodeficiency, behave similarly to those from mice lacking B cells, the researchers found. That raises the possibility that those people might be treated for malnutrition by giving them IgA antibodies.

Five Best Online File Storage Services [Hive Five]

Five Best Online File Storage Services Working with the same files in multiple places used to be a hassle. You'd have to make sure to bring the file with you, email it to yourself, or save it in a place you could get to it later. Now, there are a number of online file storage and syncing services that will make your data available on as many computers as you like. Here's a look at five of the best of those services.

Earlier in the week, we asked you which services you used to store your files online, or to at least make your data available so you could get at it anywhere you went. You responded with tons of great suggestions, and while we expected you to highlight Dropbox, we knew it isn't the only service out there that you use. Here's a look at the top five, based on your nominations.

Five Best Online File Storage Services

Dropbox

Dropbox is clearly the juggernaut of the file storage and syncing service. Its combination of 2GB of free storage just for signing up and huge bonuses for referring friends to sign up as well makes for an attractive and useful file syncing service that gets the job done and encourages you to spread the word about it. Dropbox will deliver your files to you on your Mac, Windows, or Linux system or your BlackBerry, iOS, or Android device with little hassle, and the service offers public and photo folders you can use to store and share galleries or other files with select individuals you share them with or with the world. Dropbox is also host to a wealth of third-party plug-ins and services that integrate with it to extend its features (thanks to its wide open API), and has great LAN support so you can change your files on one computer on your home network and have it instantly on another.

Five Best Online File Storage Services

Box.net

Box.net starts you off with 5GB for free. Install the Box Sync app to sync your files with the web, and install the mobile apps to get access to your files on your iOS device, Android device, Blackberry, Touchpad, or Playbook. Otherwise, you can upload your files to your Box.net account and access them via the web. Download them whenever you like, or use the service as a replacement for (or supplement to) other cloud-based services like Google Apps. Box.net combines the best things about a file syncing service with the best things about a web-based productivity suite.

Five Best Online File Storage Services

Windows Live SkyDrive

Windows Live SkyDrive starts you out with 5GB for free, and with Live Mesh you can sync your local files and folders with your SkyDrive account. If you have a Windows Live account, you already have a SkyDrive account that you can make use of. SkyDrive is especially useful for Windows users, who can configure it to automatically sync any folder on their system (like your My Documents folder, for example) to the cloud for safe keeping, or automatically upload any Microsoft Office documents you create. You can also use SkyDrive and Live Mesh as a remote access utilty, so you can get to files even if they're not being synced.

Five Best Online File Storage Services

SugarSync

SugarSync is probably Dropbox's leading competition. The service gives you 5GB for free. The service works just as well (if not better) than Dropbox, and will sync your files and folders from your desktop to the cloud with ease. You can access your data on the go via the web or on your mobile device with the SugarSync apps for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and even Symbian devices. SugarSync even aggressively keeps revision histories of your files so you can get old versions of files you may have accidentally changed. SugarSync also makes it very easy to stream music, video, or other media from your account on the web or other devices so you can enjoy it anywhere you go. SugarSync also gives you more control over your files on the web, allows you to open and edit files directly, or password protect individual files or folders.

Five Best Online File Storage Services

SpiderOak

Spideroak is probably one of the most versatile and flexible file syncing and storage solutions available. The service gets you started with 2GB of space, and then puts it to the test by allowing you to sync not only your desktop, but files on your mobile device (not just access via your mobile device, but sync from your device as well), even files on network shares and external hard drives. Refer your friends, and you get an incredible 1GB referral each, which is more than any of the other services offer. Connect SpiderOak with your Mac, Windows, or Linux system, and download the mobile apps for your iOS or Android device, and leave the rest to the service. SpiderOak also keeps revision histories, and metadata for all of your files so you can see when they were created, uploaded, and modified.

Now that you've seen the top five, as always it's time to put them to a vote.

Honorable mentions this week go out to Wuala, LaCie's file sync and storage service available for Mac, Windows, Linux, and mobile devices. Free users get 2GB of storage. Also among the runners up is Minus, a service that used to be a simple image host (and most of its users still use it that way), but has grown to a full-fledged drag-and-drop file storage and sharing service that's completely free and gives its users 10GB of storage to play with.

Have something to say about one of the competitors? Did your favorite miss the cut and you want to tell the world about it? Let's hear it in the comments below.

CBS head scolds Kutcher over Penn State tweet (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Ashton Kutcher knows what a tough day is like. Demi Moore announced that she's ending their marriage, and Kutcher earned a slap from his top CBS boss for a controversial Twitter posting.

During a Q-and-A session Thursday at a TV industry meeting, CBS Corp. Chief Leslie Moonves said he's pleased with the ratings for revamped "Two and a Half Men" and with new star Kutcher ? "aside from his comments about Penn State," Moonves added.

Last week, Kutcher condemned the firing of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and then recanted the Twitter posting after it drew a flurry of criticism. The actor said he'd been unaware of the child sex-abuse scandal engulfing the university.

On Thursday, the 49-year-old Moore announced she was splitting from Kutcher, 33, the subject of rumors of alleged infidelity. The couple wed in 2005.

Total Recall: Robin Williams' Best Movies

We count down the best-reviewed work of the Happy Feet Two star.

Robin Williams

He's won five Grammys, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Emmys, and an Oscar -- not bad for a stand-up comedian who became a household name as the star of Mork and Mindy, a Happy Days spinoff sitcom about a goofball alien. We're talking, of course, about Robin Williams -- and given that he does double duty in this week's Happy Feet Two, we decided now would be the perfect time to pay tribute to one of Hollywood's busiest and most eclectic working actors by looking back at some of his many critical highlights. We focused on Williams' larger roles, which meant leaving out memorable-but-brief appearances in films like Hamlet, Dead Again, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, but what ended up making the cut was still pretty darn impressive. Nanu-Nanu and Shazbot, it's time for Total Recall!

81%

He rose to fame on the strength of his maddeningly energetic comic persona, but Williams started to settle down a little in the 1990s and early aughts, first with dramedies like Mrs. Doubtfire, then with more serious fare, such as Patch Adams and What Dreams May Come. Some of these projects were more warmly received than others, but each of them gave audiences a glimpse of just how deeply Williams could sublimate the frantic restlessness that defined his public image, and they culminated with 2002's One Hour Photo. Here, Williams plays Sy Parrish, a profoundly lonely photo technician whose desperate, hidden attachment to his customers sends him down a dark path, and it's a testament to his skill as an actor that even though Parrish is an obviously disturbed and frankly disquieting character, Williams makes it hard not to identify, if not outright sympathize, with his sad plight. Photo was a moderate success at the box office, but critics were nearly unanimous in their praise for its star's performance. "Sy is a complete character with a physicality, inner monologue and motivation that we haven't seen from Mr. Williams in a long time," wrote Joe Lozito of Big Picture Big Sound. "And it's a pleasure to watch."

85%

Williams reunited with Terry Gilliam, who'd earlier directed him in a small role for The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, for this heartfelt 1991 drama about an abrasive radio deejay (Jeff Bridges) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a homeless man (Williams) who has a poignant connection to his past. A tale with a decidedly smaller scope than the average Gilliam production, The Fisher King traded its director's trademark special effects-assisted whimsy for a tale of redemption and simple human kindness -- and earned Williams his third Best Actor Oscar nomination in the process. "Working within the constraints of a big studio film has brought out Gilliam's best," observed Newsweek's David Ansen. "He's become a true storyteller and a wonderful director of actors. This time he delights not only the eye but the soul."

86%

It's a movie seemingly seen by an entire generation, and one that contains some of the most eminently quotable lines in Williams' entire filmography -- so what's Dead Poets Society doing so far down on this list? Fact is, as much as its cult has grown over the years, this inspirational drama about an embattled English teacher at a private academy was initially dismissed by a number of top critics, including Vincent Canby of the New York Times and Roger Ebert, who called it "shameless in its attempt to pander to an adolescent audience." Most filmgoers disagreed, of course, helping Poets rack up more than $235 million in worldwide grosses as well as four Academy Awards nominations (including Best Actor for Williams). Christopher Null of Filmcritic agreed with the crowds, saying it all added up to "The best stories and performances, one of the greatest films of the 1980s and a rare classic that should be treasured."

89%

Though he'd been helming features since the early 1990s, eyebrows still raised when it was announced that Bobcat Goldthwait would be directing Robin Williams in a comedy about a milquetoast high school teacher who pens a phony suicide note for his son after discovering him dead of auto-erotic asphyxiation. It's every bit the black comedy that its premise would suggest, but World's Greatest Dad also contains plenty of Goldthwait-style absurdity, including a scene where Bruce Hornsby shows up as himself -- and it earned praise from critics like Robbie Collin from News of the World, who wrote, "Beware that poster, with its jolly red writing and Mork from Ork's face thereon. This is not the Robin Williams of Old Dogs and License To Wed."

89%

Released during the peak of the Cold War 1980s, Moscow on the Hudson dramatized the plight of a Soviet circus musician (played by Williams in an early dramatic role) who defects to the United States while he's in New York for a performance. While films that illustrated the basic humanity at the heart of the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union weren't exactly rare in the 1980s -- heck, even Rocky IV explored a similar message -- Hudson rose above the pack thanks to its talented cast, not to mention some typically solid work from writer/director Paul Mazursky. Scott Weinberg of eFilmCritic called it "The first good look we got at Williams trying to broaden his horizons" and pronounced it "Well done."

Women more likely to have 'broken heart syndrome'

(AP) ? Females are seven to nine times more likely to suffer "broken heart syndrome," when sudden or prolonged stress like an emotional breakup or death causes overwhelming heart failure or heart attack-like symptoms, the first nationwide study of this finds. Usually patients recover with no lasting damage.

The classic case is "a woman who has just lost her husband," said Dr. Mariell Jessup, a University of Pennsylvania heart failure specialist who has treated many such cases.

Cyndy Bizon feared that was happening when her husband, Joel, suffered a massive heart attack in 2005. "May God work through your hands," the Maine woman told the surgeon as her husband was wheeled past her into the operating room. She later collapsed at a nurse's station from "broken heart syndrome" and wound up in coronary care with him. Both survived.

Japanese doctors first recognized this syndrome around 1990 and named it Takotsubo cardiomyopathy; tako tsubo are octopus traps that resemble the unusual pot-like shape of the stricken heart.

It happens when a big shock, even a good one like winning the lottery, triggers a rush of adrenaline and other stress hormones that cause the heart's main pumping chamber to balloon suddenly and not work right. Tests show dramatic changes in rhythm and blood substances typical of a heart attack, but no artery blockages that typically cause one. Most victims recover within weeks, but in rare cases it proves fatal.

Dr. Abhishek Deshmukh of the University of Arkansas had treated some of these cases.

"I was very curious why only women were having this," he said, so he did the first large study of the problem and reported results Wednesday at an American Heart Association conference in Florida.

Using a federal database with about 1,000 hospitals, Deshmukh found 6,229 cases in 2007. Only 671 involved men. After adjusting for high blood pressure, smoking and other factors that can affect heart problems, women seemed 7.5 times more likely to suffer the syndrome than men.

It was three times more common in women over 55 than in younger women. And women younger than 55 were 9.5 times more likely to suffer it than men of that age.

No one knows why, said Dr. Abhiram Prasad, a Mayo Clinic cardiologist who presented other research on this syndrome at the conference.

"It's the only cardiac condition where there's such a female preponderance," he said.

One theory is that hormones play a role. Another is that men have more adrenaline receptors on cells in their hearts than women do, "so maybe men are able to handle stress better" and the chemical surge it releases, Deshmukh said.

Bizon was 57 when her attack occurred; she's now 63. She and her husband are pharmacists.

"I remember grabbing the counter and a black curtain coming down before my eyes," she said in a telephone interview. Her attack was so severe that she went into full cardiac arrest and had to have her heart shocked back into a normal rhythm. Although most such attacks resolve without permanent damage, she later needed to have a defibrillator implanted.

About 1 percent of such cases prove fatal, the new study shows.

"In the old days, we'd say someone was scared to death," said Prasad.

About 10 percent of victims will have a second episode sometime in their lives. And although heart attacks happen more in winter, broken heart syndrome is more common in summer.

Adwatch: Rick Perry's new ad, "Lazy" (AP)

NEW YORK ? TITLE: "Lazy"

LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING: On national cable and on Iowa broadcast and cable.

KEY IMAGES: The ad opens with footage of President Barack Obama being interviewed at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Hawaii last Saturday. "We've been a little bit lazy I think over the last couple of decades," Obama says.

Rick Perry, wearing a denim shirt, appears and speaks to the camera. "Can you believe that? That's what our president thinks is wrong with America? That Americans are lazy? That's pathetic. It's time to clean house in Washington."

The Texas governor says he would push for a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget as president and if Congress refused he would "cut their pay and send them home." He concludes by saying Obama's "socialist" policies are bankrupting the U.S.

Analysis: Republican presidential hopeful Perry takes Obama's comment out of context.

Obama was speaking to a group of CEOs about the challenges of attracting foreign investment in the U.S., not about individuals or their economic challenges.

"There are a lot of things that make foreign investors see the U.S. as a great opportunity ? our stability, our openness, our innovative free market culture," Obama said. "But we've been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades. We've kind of taken for granted, well, people will want to come here and we aren't out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America."

Perry is using the comment to portray Obama as out of touch, even contemptuous, of ordinary Americans. Mitt Romney, a rival for the Republican presidential nomination, also criticized the remark this week.

In the ad, Perry then pivots to a critique of Congress, a theme he stressed this week even though Republicans control the House. It allows him to remind voters that he's an outsider in Washington and to ride public disgust with Congress, which polls show is at an all-time high. But Perry, as president, could not unilaterally enact a balanced budget amendment or cut lawmakers' pay.

Perry and many other Republicans have labeled Obama's economic policies as "socialist." It's true the president has tried to spur the economy with large investments of taxpayer money, such as with the economic stimulus package and bailouts for the bank and U.S. auto industries. But socialism is an almost-total rejection of capitalism and free markets, which Obama does not support.
